SKYBOUND

EVERYONE WAS GROWING antsy with the lack of progress towards Shusyoun. Each passing day was another that the demon king grew closer to his goal. It was no assumption—Aisha didn’t entertain unprovable notions. Rather, the whole party had noticed more strength in their undead enemies. The frequency of attacks since leaving Mount Iana had ramped up once again but the monsters had changed. They took on a myriad of forms and their power was never what could be expected. Thankfully, the rate at which undead could grow stronger was nothing compared to the adventurers. While the first powerful undead had left them bewildered, it fell without causing any harm.

By now, Sariel didn’t so much as leave their perch atop the trees during a fight. Initial hesitation regarding Shusyoun turned to frustration with its elusiveness. It had been so easy to find in their youth. Granted Veil guided the dragon away from it before locking them away for centuries. However, there were no records of it vanishing or being destroyed. This was different than Foxhill since Shusyoun was a mirror to Dawncaster.

Tetria was comparatively smaller than most other continents but was one of the most unexplored. Rumors of travelers getting lost in the eastern half of the land were starting to make a lot more sense. The forest felt endless, similar to the one separating Mount Ikrali and Spirefell, with no landmarks in sight. Weeks had passed since leaving Kargon and no one knew how much longer it would take to find Shusyoun. No one wanted to even consider they might be going in circles.

At first, Sariel considered triangulating their location using distant vistas was the best option. Years of observation grew into a great skill of recognizing notable clues. Memories of far off views from sky high were burned into their memory. Tall trees that looked over the canopy provided a similar feeling. But Sariel hoped to go higher, so much so that they considered replacing their cowl with a magical alternative. They quickly brushed off the idea. Since waking up in the middle of some unknown field fifty years ago, the cloak had remained with them and replacing it felt inappropriate.

Instead, Sariel studied the ecosystem to track major changes on the party’s route. If memory served, Shusyoun’s surroundings were dominated by monsters rather than animals. The construction of the city centuries ago garnered undue attention but the defenses overpowered any creatures foolish enough to attack. During such studies, they relied on Vofric to aid from below. With both sets of eyes, the party was less likely to be caught unaware.

“Wooden structures… wooden… structures,” Vofric muttered to himself while looking past the underbrush. What he lacked in distant vision he made up for with a discerning eye. “You do not expect them to be as advanced as yours, Sariel, correct?”

“It’s unlikely but not impossible. Some monsters have the intelligence required to craft functional edifices.”

Aisha raised her eyebrow at the suggestion. “Tetria has only a few monsters with that level of reasoning.
